Green Pants

I recently read a very interesting and touching story about a woman who is now dying from cancer. I know, I know, not exactly the Monday cheery, start-my-week-off-with-bright-news, but hear me out.

She goes on to talk about how her sickness makes her see the photographs she has of her family, her kids, her husband, etc., as more than just a piece of paper with an image on it. How it represents a moment frozen in time to re-live as many times as she’s able to look at it. How she valued the photographer who made those photos for her.

It was a pretty touching story and it got me thinking of myself not only as a photographer, but as a person who also has memories, etc. stored away in albums. The school pictures. The family photos. The snapshot Mom or Dad took of my sisters and me in dresses that would have won the Dork-Award hands down, had there been one that existed back then. (As I mentioned on my website, we ROCKED those bowl cuts, baby!)

I am thankful for the photographers who have helped document memories of moments I couldn’t re-live otherwise.

Bowl-cuts and all.

(Oh and the photo below? Don't lie. You know you want to rock those green pants and Mary Janes)

Ipanema...and Going to Work

For the past few days, my ear buds and car speakers have been happily blasting the tunes from Amy Winehouse’s “Lioness Hidden Treasures”. And yes, I do think I can sing (don’t we all??), so of course I was singing every chance I got on my commute to work with this newfound CD.  Amy did a lovely rendition of the old bossa nova song “The Girl from Ipanema” and upon listening to it for the millionth time, I got a little curious about this timeless classic and Googled how the song came about its popularity.
According to my trusty resources (what’s up Professor Wik E. Pedia!), “The Girl from Ipanema” was written about an actual girl who lived in the Ipanema district of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, who would stroll past a café everyday. I read that and thought “Heeey, that’s kinda interesting and cool to have a song written about you just because you passed by a café everyday and someone noticed!”
Well, how about a song about “The Girl that Went to Work One Day When There Was No Work?” Cuz that would be a song about me.
Yes. You read that right. I done did that.
Got up early on Monday after the Christmas break, got ready for work, drove all the way to work and realized as soon as I got into the building that there was something definitely off.  No greeting from the receptionist (MAYBE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO RECEPTIONIST, YOU NERD!), no buzz of people in the building. Just me and the sound of my high heels click-clacking and echoing against that marble floor.
Needless to say, my “I’m-awake-and-ready-for-the-New-Year-Cheesey-Grin” drooped just a bit as I soon realized I made a huge boo-boo in remembering we had the day after New Year’s off from work.
After I click-clacked my way hurriedly back to my car (before anyone saw me in my moment of I’m Super Smart), I suddenly realized this extra day off of work gave me an opportunity to tweak my website and finalize other details for the roll out of my photography business. In the end, it all worked out just dandy. I basically got a day to work on taking a few more steps in my plan towards my photography business, this huge dream I’ve been chipping away at.
On second thought, maybe a cool song can be written about me, too!
Nerdiness and all, I wouldn’t mind being known as The Girl Who Dreamed Big…..And Went To Work.

Spam Musubi and Some News

Happy New Year! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed the Christmas break and are having a blessed New Year so far. It seems every year goes by faster and faster, all the more reason to put on the breaks every so often and smell the roses.  Or the hibiscus. The husband has been inkling for a trip to Hawaii again this year, so hopefully that will be something we get to do again this year.
Mmmmmmm. Spam musubi.
Anyhoo! These past few weeks have been a vacation for me and I can’t be more thankful. It gave me time to finally work on finalizing the website for Heartbox Photography. It also gave me a chance to finalize the tweaks on the past few photoshoots done in November and December. And it gave me time to eat more chocolate than I intended, hang with friends and family, cuddle my puppy, Kona a little more than I have been and talk my dear husband’s ear off at home as he continued to plug through working at home. Yes, he loves me!
It’s a new year and I’m so excited to introduce you to the official website for Heartbox Photograph!
I actually feel like waving my hands around in excitement like I’m 5 years old again who just got her first Cabbage Patch Kid! Because truly, after so much time and effort put into designing this site, it feels like Christmas again. With chocolate sprinkles on top.
The new Facebook page for Heartbox Photography can also be found here.
Below are a few of my favorite photos from recent shoots in November and December.  Thank you to all who have patiently waited I worked on the photos from their shoot. You guys rock!
Here’s to 2012 and new beginnings!

C'mon, LAUGH!

I hope you are all enjoying the Christmas season so far! Wanna stop and laugh for a minute with me? My husband is in sales and every calendar year, he kinda looks like this as he intently rushes to finish wrapping up his year. I just about DIED LAUGHING when I saw this because really, we ALL look like this inside when we're rushing to finish something.

Merry Christmas!!

Where you been, yo?!?!

In honor of my last post….CHEEE-HOOOO and of course, Merry Christmas, ya’ll!

Just to give you a quick update (cuz I know you got Christmas parties to go to, chocolate to eat, and presents to wrap!)

This month has been a whirlwind of editing the last of the photoshoots of the year, building up a Facebook page to launch Heartbox Photography to the social media world, and tweaking a website to make the virtual storefront official.

For those of you who recently finished a photoshoot with me and, the blog write up by moi and album in Facebook of all your final shots are going to be available in January on Heartbox Photography’s new page. I’m slowly moving everything from Maria Abelaye and a Camera over and thank you mucho for your patience as this transition happens.

And here is just one photo of many, many more to come that I am currently working on.

Like the hair?

Mad skillz.

If I were Samoan...

So, if I were Samoan, I'd be hollering "CHEEEEEEE-HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"  right about now. I'd love to be a part of the Samoan rugby team, even if my best yell sounds more like a squeaking mouse being stepped on by the giant athletes of this team.

CHEEEEEEEEEEE-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
If you don't know, that's like their version of "whooo-hoooooo/yaaaay/yeah!!" or in my little world "YEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!". I like to think of it as their version of "RAWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRR YOU DON'T WANT NONE OF THIS!"

I only have this cultural insight because my husband's family attends a church with a good Polynesian mix of folks, my sister attends a church that is very much Samoa in California, AND she hasn't quit yet on yelling CHEEEEEEE-HOOOOO in my ear every chance she gets. She yells CHEE-HOOO when her football team wins, when her basketball team wins, when her daughter accomplishes anything new, or just when she wants to see how deaf she can make her older sister.

Eh? What'd you say??

I got all "chee-hooooooo-ish" because yesterday I finally received in the mail the much awaited business liscense for my photography business. My dear husband took a picture of it and texted it to me, letting me know that yes, it's official, it's here baby!! Although I'm still in the midst of building the website, pulling  and editing photos to display, deciding on contract language, setting pricing structure, and trying  not to barf from all the anxiety/excitement, I'm still super stoked on a whole new level becuase now I can officially say that yes this is real, and yes 2012 will birth my dream of having a photography business!

Coming soon to a camera near you.....Heartbox Photography!!! (was that corn-cheesy or what?!?)

Yep, Heartbox Photography is what I named this baby. The official website, etc., are to come, so stay tuned.

Happy Friday, everyone! Say it with me...you know you want to....
CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

We Be Striking a Pose: Our First Styled Shoot with Salon Ethos

The clock read 5:00 a.m. Dun, dun, dun.

Five am??
Yes, 5:00 a.m.
Get up, Rona, let's go! Today's the first!

Those are the thoughts that prodded me out of bed early, (VERY EARLY) on a Sunday morning. I am the poster child for sleeping in, just ask my husband. Crusty eyes, drool and all. (how's that for beauty sleep?) But this particular morning was different. I actually popped out of bed energetic and ready to get out of the house. (After I took care of the crusty eyes, of course. )

Kristina of Salon Ethos and I have been planning these styled photoshoots for months and today was the first shoot of 3 we were doing. She was getting her hairstyling skills on for our models and I was doing my thing with the camera. We were very excited and though the weather looked questionable and cloudy, we knew that it was going to turn out just fine. At least, we hoped so.

I showed up at 6 a.m. to pick up Kristina and the minute she answered the door, I had to laugh to myself.  Kristina is a dedicated artist to her craft of hair, so why didn't it surprise me that her hair was completely done and ready to go, but her pajamas and make-up were still in the works? My sister was every bit as excited as I was, but the look in her huge eyes also said "oh my gosh are we really up this early?"

Yes, we are really doing this.

Our model was Claire, who you may remember from her photoshoot here.

Kristina of Salon Ethos worked her magic on Claire's hair and after a few hours of hairspray, girl talk, and doughnuts (big ups to Claire's husband, Jon for patiently enduring the hairspray fumes, picking up doughnuts, and ignoring girly chatter that probably interrupted his sports watching more times than he anticipated), we were ready to go.

And oh, when girls who love hair, fashion, and photography get together watch out world. Because despite the clouds, the wind, and rain, we be striking a pose. For realz.

I'm so proud and excited to present to you the skills of Kristina of Salon Ethos. Below are a few of my favorite shots.

You can view the entire shoot here on my Facebook page.

Mikey. 2011.

This is what I feel like when I see a plate of brownies:
DPP_0027

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to do my very first photoshoot with a baby. I've done photoshoots with kids before but never with a kid had just two teeth. Needless to say, I wasn't quite sure how this was going to work doing my first baby photoshoot (what would I do if the baby needed a diaper change in the middle of the shoot?), but in the end we had a lot of fun. With a little help from his mommy and daddy, Mikey stayed giggling and proudly smiling, showing off the two chompers he bore that would make any dentist proud. It was a fun afternoon, perfect lighting, and just a great opportunity to practice doing a baby photoshoot. You can view the debut of Mikey and his two teeth here.

Inspiration...and baby Mikey's toes.

I couldn't wait to get home after the gym. To burst through the door, kiss my husband and baby puppy, and grab my little notebook to scribble away.

Ideas, that is. Scribble down a flood of ideas that came to me literally as I was on a drive to my local gym. I ran up the stairs feeling my pulse quicken as I got closer to the door of our little home. I just had to get these ideas on paper before they decide to up and run away before I could harness them down to something that made sense. It's funny what a little inspiration can do.

This all started because, on the drive home, a song came blasting through my speakers in hopes to motivate me for a much needed workout tonight. (I felt a little oinky knowing I downed three slices of pizza at work...happily, too.)

I thought the music would, at the very least, provide the "Rocky can workout like crazy-type motivation", and in the end it gave me so much more. Out of that little CD and a crank up of the volume button on my car's player,  I am ecstatic to say that a new photo project idea is now birthed and I anticipate it coming to fruition by early next year. Though I can't say much about it right now, I'm just all kindsa happy because it's yet another opportunity to push myself in my photography. And well, because inspiration just makes me happy. Know what I mean?

And because a blog entry is so much more fun with a photo, here is one of my favorite photo from this weekend's photoshoot with baby Mikey. Don't you just love those toes?!?

The write up and more photos are to come, so stay tuned!

Jon & Claire. 2011.

These past few months as I've been working towards building my portfolio, brainstorming on different ways to design my photography business website, etc. there are a few things I'm noticing. One of them is that I still get a bit nervous before each shoot, even if it's just with friends who are wonderfully supportive. In fact, I just recently confessed to my husband that literally right when we're driving to the photoshoot site, the thought of "Um, I don't want to do this, why did I ask them to do this shoot, oh maybe they'll cancel?" actually crosses my mind. That fearful type of thinking tries to take hold of me even within the first few shots. It's like my nerves are staggering any type of creative flow.

And then....it happens.

With each shot fired on my lil' ol Canon during a photoshoot, that fear slowly loses it's grip on my mind. I like to think that that  God's creative spirit beat down Mr. Fear and said you got no business here, so get the steppin'. And it's in those moments do I slowly feel a courage to direct each photo, to direct my subject's poses, to smile and enjoy this wonderful medium of creativity called photography.

It's freakin' great.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that God can use anything, (like, ANYTHING) for His glory. And after spending some time with these wonderful friends of ours, I can see how God is using my camera as a way to reconnect with friends my husband and I have not seen in a while. The weather was amazing for a city shoot and so we capitalized on all the grit and concrete the city has to offer and blended it with the style and edge that is Claire and Jon.

I love details and so the colors and accessories Claire chose along with the amazing tattoos that both of them sport (gosh, I wish I were tough enough to get a tattoo...like, even a itty bitty one) made for great photographs. Jon had new a tattoo in the works (you'll see it in the shots) and it just blended so well with the urban theme we were going for. After the shoot the four of us had dinner, caught up on life, chatted about God, and laughed a ton. It's been too long since we'd seen them and I'm so glad something as simple as a photoshoot became a way for friends to spend time together.

With that being said, below are a few of my favorites from our time with Claire and Jon. You can view the entire album on my Facebook page here, under Claire and Jon's album.

Perez Kids. 2011.

My husband and I always look forward to hanging out with the Perez family. We don't live very close to each them, but it's always worth the drive whenever we do get a chance to spend some time together. There's something awesome about being around great friends that always encourage you to walk strong with the Lord. Friends that make you laugh the whole time you're hanging out with them. And whenever we're leaving the Perez household, two things are guaranteed: My heart always feels uplifed because they've prayed for us and my face, no doubt, has suffered from serious laughing cramps. And I'm ok with that because I'd rather have my face frozen on a smile than frozen on a frown, you know?

And a few weeks ago was no exception. We spent the afternoon doing a photoshoot of their 4 growing-up-way-too-fast kids and and had a blast. A local park to hang out in and a bag of White Rabbit did the trick on getting all the kids to be happy and smilin' for my camera. The kids did an awesome job and after the shoot, we got to hang out, eat pizza and laugh some more. What can I say except that God's blessed us with great friends. Great friends who always send us home with a happy-laughing-smiling cramp on our faces.

Yipee!! - My Very First Published Photo

It isn't fun having a sore throat and thinking as I wake up this morning "OMG, what if it's strep/bronchitis/the flu/some unknown-I'll be-the-first-case-of-a-new-disease-they've-discovered."

But first, I guess calming down and just waiting to see the doctor is the best thing to do first, right? Right.

On the bright side, I got a pleasant surprise in my Inbox this morning as soon as I quit panicking about my possibly diseased throat. Ms. Ava Albano, whom some of you may remember from the photoshoot we did here sent me a message to let me know she had been featured in an article at her college and that they had used a photo from her photoshoot with me. I got all sorts of happy to see my photo used, but even more so to see why they had written an article on Ava. She's a hard-working college student I'm super proud of her. Check out the article on:

Ava Albano's SOS story

Thanks, Ava for sharing this with me and keep up the great work!
Happy Tuesday, everybody!!

White Rabbit Candy and the Perez Family

If you have never had White Rabbit candy, go to your nearest Asian store and pick up a bag. Make sure you got a good dental insurance plan in place, then start chomping away at one of the best candies ever. Your teeth'll be hurtin', but man, they're good. Like, hecka.

They're also useful for helping kids get through a photoshoot. Sugar usually does. =) Armed with a bag of this candy, my hubby and I met up with our friends, the Perez family, to do a photoshoot of their kids. I was a little nervous because I've only done one other photoshoot of kids and it was only with two, the Maganito kids. This time around, I was going to be handling four kids and hoped they wouldn't get tired of smiling for my camera.

The shoot went awesome and it gave us a chance to hang out with friends we hadn't seen in a while. Below is a preview of the Perez photoshoot. More to come, so stay tuned!!

A lil' bit of Pinky and a lil' bit of Bwain

It’s been an exciting month so far. To actually think that the dream of being a professional photographer can very well become a reality with some hard work is uber cool. Super duper, uber, fantabulously cool.

I do have to admit though, that this past month and a half or so of planning, researching, and sketching out ideas for photoshoots, business plans, insurance information, drooling over camera gear I’d love to someday own has got me suddenly remembering Pinky and the Brain. Er, I mean Pinky and the BWAIN! Get it right…..BWAIN! Remember them? Here’s an image help jog your memory:
show
Ok, so now that we’re all on the same page as to who Pinky and the Bwain are...

As a kid I used to watch this famous WB cartoon with my sisters, imitating them all day, and laughing at the comedy they evoked through their futile attempts to take over the world. One smart lab rat and one not-so-smart/scatter-brained lab rat. You might be now asking yourself, “Um, ok, so in your quest to make your photography gig a reality, WHY are you remembering Pinky and the Brain? I mean, BWAIN?”

Here’s why:
When I’m all focused and being proactive about researching, planning a shoot, taking this step and that step, practicing with my camera, etc., I kinda look the way Brain does. All determined and stuff.
brain
With the furrowed brow and focused eyes. (Ask my husband and he’ll preacher-testify-HALLELOOOOOYER that yes it’s true, his lovely wife sometimes does morph into his lovely photographer geek) In some ways, I even sometimes think accomplishing this dream is a bit like taking over the world. The photography world. With lots of new, prime lenses. That capture lotsa pretty images. And color. And bokeh. And fantabulous depth of field. Ooooooooooohhh. (See? Geeeeee--eeeeek!)

And then, alas, there are my Pinky days. Yes, the Pinky days. These are the days where the details of all the stuff I’m learning and practicing just make me feel a bit scatter-brained/haven’t got a clue/I gotta fill out what paperwork?/wait, what am I doing and why am I doing this?/ durrrrrrrr, I dunno/what’re we gonna do today, Bwain? Oh, right, take pictures or something??

You know. The days I can't focus, when I look a little more like this:
pinky

But you know what? It’s ok. So what, right? I think most people, in their quest to take over the world/make that dream come true, finish that degree, win that race, find that job, all have a bit of Pinky and a bit of Brain in them. It’s all part of the process. So do it. Go on and dream big. These lab rats did and they had their own cartoon. =)

After all, Pinky couldn’t be without BWAIN couldn’t be without Pinky couldn’t be without BWAIN.

Happy Thursday!

Allyn the Ninja

At first, she seems quiet. A little, quiet, um, Asian girl-person I was doing a photoshoot of.

And well, for the most part, it’s true, she is. But don’t be fooled because once she gets on stage or even if you pay really close attention when you’re just hanging out with her, you’ll notice that this kid-turned-grown-up packs the one-liners and humor like she’s the comic ninja or something. Like, really quiet, and then BAM! You don’t know what happened, but she musta just hit you with her HA-HA stick cuz you’re suddenly laughing over a seemingly harmless comment she made a few minutes ago. No, for realz, she’s not just funny, SHE FUNNNAAAAY! (like, heeeey, snap yo fingers and do the chicken neck thing)

For realz, I personally think she’s like the Asian Tina Fey or something. Tina Fey, if you’re reading this, WOOOHOO WE LOVE TINA FEY WHOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

Meet Ms. Allyn. I met her at the same time I met her side-kick Ava, whom I just finished a photoshoot for. The hubby and I have had the fortunate experience of watching Allyn do her thang in a few improv shows at her old high school and what can we say except that again, she is THE comic ninja and an awesome performer. But more than that, she’s grown up into an awesome young woman, who’s already doing great things in the world.

Allyn, if you ever end up acting or even just meeting Tina Fey, I’ll buy you all the mint-chocolate chip ice cream in the world if you let the hubs and me kick it with you in Hollywood.

The Boos and Yays of Mistakes

Mistakes.

Booo to mistakes…and yay to mistakes. Boo because it just sucks making them and the aftermath of tense shoulders and flutters in the tummy seem like it wasn’t worth the misstep. And yay (yes, yay) to mistakes because if you learn from them, it means you’re growing, you care about learning, and are an actual human and not some superhuman you kinda thought you were. (What? Am I the only one who thought she was WonderWoman at one point in life?)

Ah, joy to the pain of mistakes and the learning process that comes with it. I admit, though, I sometimes wish the process was more “yay!” than a grumbling “boo.”

Here’s to the mistakes and the painful learning that comes from it.

C’mon now, say it with me.....

YAY!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Ava!!

So, when I first met Ava, she was a teenager.

Until I started talking to her.

That's when I discovered the truth---she was a old soul appearing to be a teenager. No joke, I soon realized that Ava was young, but mature at the same time. What cracks me up about her is that she can call it how it is, no beating around the bush, with just this one look of hers. It's like this smirk, but with a twist of "are you freakin' kidding me?" kinda look. The kind that would make you think twice about acting like an idiot around her. I liked her  personality immediately, fo realz!

Ava's now a grown kid, an awesome young woman and I'm proud to call her friend.

If you ever need assistance on a huge event, call her. The girl has got mad event planning skills and even helped in the chaos of my own wedding a few years ago.

Just don't act all crazy on her because she's packin' that Ava smirk and ain't afraid to use it.

KFC Ain't Got Nothing on Me, yo!

I am finally, finally, finally, FINALLY attempting to shoot in Manual mode. Whoo-hooo! Why have I taken so long to try out this camera mode that other photographers rave about?

Well, I'll just tell you why...because I am a straight up Kentucky Fried CHICKEN! The crispy kind. But alas, this fried bird is finally making the change and oh, wow, who knew this camera function could be so fun?

So pardon me while I go fluff my feathers and run into the world of Manual mode. Photography adventures, here I come!

Eh. Fried chicken actually sounds good right now.

Remembering

Did I even spell that right? Mullets? It takes two seconds to look it up and eh, I'm going to leave it that way. MULLETS! The hubs and I attended THE CONCERT OF THE YEAR! Madonna? No. Bruno Mars? No. Katy Perry? EH, NO!

Wait for it....wait for it.....

HALL AND OATES!!!! Yep, I said it, and ya'll know what I'm talking about! And shall I say it was quite an experience for my husband and me being among the youngest ones there belting out all the words to "Private Eyes" and "Maneater"? The only ones younger than us were the "kids" who's parents took them out there with them to watch this show.

"private eyes....are watching you! they see your eeeevrrrry mooooove!! private eeeeeyes are watching you watching you watching youuuuuu..."

Now. While I do realize that there probably wasn't anything cool about our look in the 80's, there was something VERY cool about rocking out to all the hits of Hall and Oates at last night's concert. Like, I felt like I should have fixed my hair into a side ponytail and I know the hubs felt like he had to sport a turtleneck like he was 8 years old again.

And whatcha know about them mullets???!! Yes, I know. Somethings are better left in the past and straight up forgotten. Mullets included.

While the 80's are behind us and bad hairstyles are a distant memory (mostly) and last night's concert brought back the fun memories, today brought about  a solemn reminder of somethings that should never be forgotten. Ten years ago this nation was rocked in such a way that still sends a chill through my spine and places a sadness in my heart. Again, some dates should never be forgotten and September 11, 2001 is one of them. Here's honoring the men, women, and children who lost their lives in the Twin Tower attacks. We will never forget.
