Portrait of a Lady | 50+ and Fabulous of 2021

In the Spring of 2021, I officially launched the very first Portrait of a Lady | 50+ and Fabulous Series. I have always photographed women of all ages, but never designed anything specifically dedicated to celebrating this fabulous demographic of women.

Until now.

The goal was to intentionally reach out and photograph 50 women in 2021 who are 50+ and proud to share it with others through their images. I am honored to now present to you all the first ever compilation of my clients whose images together create a beautiful tapestry of art that speaks a message of celebration at every age and season of life!

Bay Area Women In Business | Kelly Dunn

Over the years, as any small business owner I am sure will agree with, you realize how important it is to have a network of great connections. Truly, no (wo)man business owner is an island and I am fortunate to know some of the best out there.

My work with Heartbox Photography is centered on women and I think that while it’s important to obviously highlight the awesome women I have the privilege to work with as clients, it is equally important to highlight the women who are part of the business connections that have supported me along this journey. And one such organization I am proud to be part of is a phenomenal group called Women’s Networking Alliance.

Kelly Dunn is the owner of Kelly Dunn Insurance Agency. She also currently serves as the Education Chair for our WNA Chapter (Chapter 122 - Los Altos) and in the time I have gotten to know Kelly, it is obvious she not only has a passion for what she does in her work, but also being a contributing member to our networking group, always being among the first to suggest a contact or connection that would be a beneficial resource for our group to learn from. (Hence her role as our Education Chair!)

It is my honor to highlight Kelly in this month’s “Bay Area Women In Business” profile!

Can you share a little bit about you and your business?  My mother passed away unexpectedly when I was 18 years old. Fortunately my godfather is an insurance agent and had my parents set up adequately. It was then that I truly learned the importance of insurance and having the right coverages.

What has your journey looked like professionally to get to where you are now?  A lot of hard work and being able to hear the word no repeatedly. I just take comfort in knowing with every no I am that much closer to a yes!

What do you enjoy about what you do? What are some of the challenges?  I enjoy protecting my clients, knowing that in one of their worst moments, car accident, home fire, etc. that they will be ok because I provided them with the correct coverages. My biggest challenge is no one likes to talk about insurance so I try to find ways to make it interesting and fun when I can.

Knowing what you know now about your career, what would you tell your 18 year old self?  Other people’s opinions are a reflection of their own limitations and boundaries. I had so many people tell me having your own business is too hard/too much work and that I should just get a “real” job.

Who inspires you and why?  My grandmother was my biggest inspiration because she was a strong, independent woman who always took care of herself.

A fun or surprising fact about yourself?  I was tetherball champion in 5th grade at my school’s field and track day. Lol

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?  I would love to meet Audrey Hepburn, I think she was a very classy lady and I love her sense of style.

Freya Krishnan | A Celebration of Phenomenal Women

No joke, one of the very first things I ever shared with Freya was that I simply could not take a selfie to save my life. (Yes, I am still somehow a photographer!) Freya was holding a workshop I attended dedicated to helping people like me see that a good selfie is indeed possible and can be used for fun social media marketing. I am less afraid of selfies now because of her! =)

Sometime later, I had the privilege to help Freya update her own headshots. This driven and creative woman does phenomenal work helping others as a Visibility and Confidence Coach as well as an entrepreneur and mentor. I am so proud to share with you all not only some of her images from her photoshoot with me, but also a bit more about Freya and her story that led to where she is today and shapes who she continues to grow into for the future.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

“I have always been a huge advocate for women and small businesses. As a Visibility + Confidence Coach, my mission is to empower women in business so that they can be seen as their most authentic and confident selves. I run workshops and group programs that teach on how to increase visibility, expand networks, and become more confident in the process.

I have been an entrepreneur for about 15+ years now, but it feels like I have been one for most of my life. I was born and raised in the Philippines. Growing up, my parents always ran some form of small business. They made sure that their kids helped out in all their ventures, and though none of us siblings ended up going into business school, in their own way our parents taught us motivation, resilience and work ethic. And they most definitely instilled the entrepreneur mindset in me.

I migrated to the United States at 17 to study Computer Science…that is a long story. I somehow found my way back into entrepreneurship because I needed to find fulfillment and an opportunity to practice creativity that my grey cubicle could not provide.”

My passion is to help other women succeed by leading by example and showing them that they are capable of ANYTHING they set their minds to.

The challenge for me is finding balance in everything that I do. Being a hybrid entrepreneur, I have to juggle my day job as a Project Manager with my other businesses. It's a lot to manage but I always make sure I have fun and set aside time for self-care.”

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your 18 year old self?

”Have a long term vision, learn how to set goals and surround yourself with people who know where they are going and are going to challenge you to be a better version of yourself.”

A fun or surprising fact about yourself?

“I secretly want to be a food photographer/stylist. I do love food and I love to travel. So almost every trip I go, I try to go on a food walking tour or have a list of restaurants that I want to try. My whole family is this way. I guess we were raised as foodies and wanderers! I also love to cook and consider it a relaxing and creative outlet to work on a new recipe or prepare a meal for guests.”

Lisa Riggs | A Celebration of Phenomenal Women

“It’s making a difference in the world that prevents me from ever giving up.”

-Deborah Meier

It is my honor to share with you all this month more about the CEO, Founder, and woman behind the Bay Area-based company, Spirit Sox USA.

Phenomenal women are everywhere and Lisa Riggs is no exception. She comes from a long line of entrepreneurs (her grandfather started his own jam and jelly company!) and is the first in her family to move from food-industry based entrepreneurship to socks! Spirit Sox USA helps fuel fundraisers for organizations in various industries and non-profits, both locally and nationally.

She has also been featured as a podcast guest on Blue Roads Education Group, School Zone Podcast, and Enterprise Podcast Network. In addition to being affectionately known as the “Sock Queen”, Lisa is also a proud mother, wife, and loyal Bay Area fan of both the 49ers and Giants!

“I founded Spirit Sox USA about 5 years ago. We are a certified woman owned company that customizes socks uniquely for each customer. My true goal is to make the world a better place 1 sock at a time and that's why I do what I do and donate 5% of my profits to helping underserved communities.

On a personal note, I've been married almost 25 years and am enjoying empty nest more than I expected with my husband! My son, Mitchell, is 20 and attends UCI, majoring in Chemistry with a goal of saving the planet with chemistry. My daughter, Kayla, is 19 and will be a sophomore at Cornell, studying communications and already an editor for the Cornell Sun and blog writer for the Women's Network. We love our animals! Our 2 rescue dogs, Tucker and Callie, our 30 year old box turtle, Henry, and our 5 fantail goldfish! In my spare time I love to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, go to the beach and read. My happy place is swimming with the sea turtles in Maui!”

What has your journey looked like personally/professionally to get to where you are now?

“I had to grow a lot personally in order to grow professionally. I'm a perfectionist and perfectionists do not like to fail. Do you know the % of startups that fail? 90%. So my personal growth which included confidence in myself and my abiilites as well as overcoming, or even embracing, the fear of failure. I have to admit Google search is my friend - it's amazing what I have been able to teach myself from full Photoshop skills to how to build a business!”

What do you enjoy about what you do? What are some of the challenges?

“Honestly, my favorite part of my job is helping my customers improve their community or area of the world. Who would think a pair of socks can make the world a better place?!

But time after time, I've seen my customers raise money with their sock fundraisers to fight teen suicide, support Down Syndrome, raise awareness for mental health, fund cancer reasearch on so on."

My main challenge is being a one woman show, not because I'm a woman, but because I wear so many hats. I did get funding to start this company so I truly have built it from the ground up. As we've grown, I've been able to hire contractors to take on roles in the company but I just never seem to have enough time to get it all done.”

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your 18 year old self?

“My 18 year old self always focused on the negatives about myself rather than the positives. Thankfully I when I went to college I found both my indepence and the start of my self confidence. So if I could talk to her now I'd say: Be kinder to yourself. Enjoy the moment. Have confidence in YOU.”

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._7298.jpg

What do you appreciate most about your life now/what are you most proud of?

“My family 100%. I am so proud of my kids for their intelligence, their accomplishments and most importantly for the genuinely good humans that they are. I'm also very proud of my husband and I who have our 25th anniversary approaching and worked our tails off to create a loving and happy household for our family. As we all know it's not always easy, but it sure is worth it.”

Who inspires you and why?

“My dad has always been my biggest inspiration. He's so smart and confident but also one of the kindest, most thoughtful people you will ever meet. He's run and sold multiple companies so he is tough in the boardroom but a softy with babies and dogs and his grandchildren, too! I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My grandfather started his own jam and jelly company. My dad started a strawberry company. And as the 1st female entrepreneur I took us out of food and into socks!”

A fun or surprising fact about yourself?

“Fun fact: I have a 30 year old box turtle named Henry. He is my sidekick and I love him dearly! Also, I am a sports nut! Die hard 49er and Giants fan. We've had season tickets to the Niners for 31 years and I rarely miss a game!”

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“Honestly, I think I'd like to meet Oprah. She has overcome so many barriers and failures to be the household name that she is while always retaining her class and her authenticity. She is someone women of all ages and colors can look to as a role model.”

Aundrea Lacy | A Celebration of Black Excellence

It is always a wonderful surprise when situations that seem to be happy accidents end up yielding the most pleasant of results.

After baking brownies as a thank you gift for a friend many years ago, Aundrea later realized she had transposed the brownie recipe without knowing she was dyslexic at the time. These results, in addition to hard work, perseverance, and limitless vision over the years is what catapulted Aundrea Lacy, owner/founder of Bay Area-based company Luv’s Brownies, into the inspirational success she is today. (You can read more about her story here) Not only has her company’s desserts become an award-winning Bay Area favorite, but Luv’s Brownies has also earned national recognition from shows that include Good Morning America, The Montell Williams Show, CBS New York, just to name a few!

Aundrea is a firm believer in generously giving back to her community and in addition to being a successful entrepreneur, she has also established The Andrea R. Lacy Grit Award Scholarship, which is awarded to student applicants on the path to pursuing higher education or vocational training.

It is my honor to share with you all the latest feature in the Celebration of Black Excellence Series, Aundrea Lacy!

Tell us a bit more about your background - where are you from, what inspired you to choose your specific area of education and eventual career?

“I was born in San Franciso. My family moved to the peninsula when I was elementary school and I went to Mills High School in Millbrae.”

What are you most proud of in your life and why?

“I am most proud of my son Mateo-Sebastian. His youthfulness and zest for life gives me hope for the next generation.”

What is something most people might now know about you?

“I’m frugal. I know how to stretch a dollar.”

Can you tell me about someone who has had a huge influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

“My son has had a huge influence over my life. He has taught me to have patience.”

What is the best advice you've ever received?

“Best advice I received was from my father. Hard work always pays off.”

Who/what inspires you and why?

“My inspiration comes from watching other Black Americans thrive.”

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“I would like to meet Oprah, Marcus Lemonis, Tyler Perry. All of them show tenacity and are willing to always give back. They have used their platforms to enlighten and educate others.”

What does it "honoring and celebrating black excellence" mean to you personally?

Black Excellence means bringing more voices to the table. The richness of our culture is unmatched. Most people don’t know the slave trade was huge. Brazil got more slaves than the United States. The African diaspora should be discussed more in school. Our Black history month shouldn’t be just a month.”

Celebrating Phenomenal Women | Tiffany Castillo

When I first started Heartbox Photography almost 9 years ago, I (as many photographers who are just starting out will attest to) began experimenting with the various styles and types of photography I wanted to specialize in. Everything from families to weddings and everything in between helped refine my creative style over the years and clearly showed me that I thoroughly enjoyed portrait photography that specifically highlighted women the most.

Tiffany Castillo is a devoted mother, wife, and works as a loan officer with Green Family Mortgage, a family-owned mortgage broker. During the early stages of my business, I had the privilege of working with Tiffany on a styled photoshoot in the San Jose area, as she so graciously agreed to help me build my portfolio and serve as one of my models.

It has been many years since that photoshoot and I recently had the honor of working with her again, this time to create her business headshots. One of my favorite things about her session is that we not only got to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor light, but also that her images prove you can absolutely have professional headshots that seamlessly integrate a fresh style and sense of fashion as well.

Without further ado, I am proud to share with you all the latest photoshoot featuring this phenomenal woman, Tiffany Castillo.

“My passion is giving people knowledge regarding home financing and homeownership. Although I am a “mortgage loan officer,” I like to consider myself an advisor when it comes to home financing. Advising new and current homeowners how they can best utilize their largest asset.

Interestingly enough, it took me awhile to get here – it was not a straight line and I am proud to have arrived at my destination thus far. When thinking about “what I want to be when I grow up,” it was never a mortgage advisor.

While in tech, my manager knew I was not happy and asked where I see myself in 5 years. I was honest and told him that I can see myself in real estate but not as a realtor. He reached out to a family member who is a mortgage broker and asked if she would be willing to speak with me. From there, she took me under her wing and has guided me to where I am today.”

What do you enjoy about what you do? What are some of the challenges?

“Being part of this big event in a person or persons life/lives. The elation and excitement they feel, that its doesn’t seem real because it hasn’t all set in yet. The challenges – in general, purchasing a home is a stressful time due to the timeline of the purchase. Getting first time homebuyers to understand that things are moving as they should can be hard as there is a lot at stake for them, and I completely understand. I think it really comes down to trust – building that trust with my client – both a joy and a challenge.”

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your 18 year old self?

“Save early and don’t live outside your means even if it looks pretty – whatever it was, it was not worth it knowing what I know about being financially healthy with an asset of a home!”

What do you appreciate most about your life now/what are you most proud of?

“I appreciate my family - my kids are my pride and joy. They are what push me every day to do what I do. To help those families who are like mine and only want the best for them.”

Who inspires you and why?

“Again, my kids. They really show me how important it is to live in the moment. That not everything is so serious. They inspire me to be a better person every day and I base my decisions on what is best for them, both personally and professionally.”

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._6513.jpg

A fun or surprising fact about yourself?

“I am an adrenaline junkie, love tattoos, roller coasters, anything to get the heart racing – you’ve got one life, do what makes your heart go!”

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“I would want to see my grandfathers to be honest. They were both very different men and when they passed, for one I was too young, and for the other, I was too naïve. I would want to sit down with them and ask them about their lives – how they came to be who they are. Stories from my family are great but I have my own questions and would love to hear their stories from them.”

“I strive to be the best resource to all who know me in whatever it is they need assistance in. And if I don’t have the answer, I will do my best to point them in the right direction. I will continue to be curious, knowledge is power!”

“I grew up in Tacoma, Washington, the daughter of Latvian refugees who immigrated to USA when Soviets invaded after WWII.  I was three years old when the family arrived, so I am a completely assimilated American woman, with the benefit of cultural ties—language, food, community—to the Old World.

My education consists of BA in Psych and MBA in management.  My career was largely in construction—first in accounting, and later as CFO for a mid-size home builder, so I was able to indulge a bit of my creative side with involvement, however cursory, in marketing and staging.

After retirement, I moved to California to be closer to my son and daughter in the Bay Area.  At 74 years of age, I feel there is a lot of adventure and travel waiting for me.  [I am} looking forward the end of the pandemic and to the world reopening!”

“I celebrate good health and the energy to pursue interesting and varied experiences.  I celebrate the ability to choose a path completely different from my previous life, the ability to meet new people and participate in charitable activities.  I celebrate being able to read or do nothing at all when the spirit moves me.”

“Fifty+ and Fabulous is an exciting threshold and opportunity to enter a new array of experiences with solidified confidence and optimism. I know those traits were often lacking in my earlier and more self-conscious stages of life.”

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._6311.jpg

What are some of the challenges about this season of your life?

“I notice that there is sport in marginalizing older people.  Sometimes we are technically challenged, and marketing is seldom directed to this demographic.  It would be a mistake, however, to count us out because we love to learn, travel, and look good while doing it.”

I think it is important to stay centered and present in every stage of life.  So, enjoy the college years and everything that comes after with a sense of excitement, curiosity, and vigor.  Each time is different and allows you continually grow and evolve.  And most of all—never sell yourself short.  Remember that you really are “all that!”

What do you appreciate most about your life now?

“I appreciate being close to my children and grandchildren, the community where I live and the relationships I have formed.

I appreciate the natural beauty surrounding me.  And especially, I appreciate the freedom and time I have to spend with those I love.”

Who or what inspires you and why?

“I am inspired by the intellect and innovation of this age in which we live.  Constant exposure to new ideas and writings instills fascination and a desire to keep up and continue learning.”

A Celebration of Black Excellence | Black History Month 2021

“We've learned that quiet isn't always peace

And the norms and notions

of what just is

Isn't always justice

And yet the dawn is ours

before we knew it

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._5281.jpg

Somehow we do it

Somehow we've weathered and witnessed

a nation that isn't broken

but simply unfinished

We the successors of a country and a time

Where a skinny Black girl

descended from slaves and raised by a single mother

can dream of becoming president

only to find herself reciting for one

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._5280.jpg

And yes we are far from polished

far from pristine

but that doesn't mean we are

striving to form a union that is perfect

We are striving to forge a union with purpose”

Remembering The Why's

Sometimes, like most people, I get swept up in the busyness of striving and moving forward as an entrepreneur that I forget the why’s of my work and even the impact it has on people I have the privilege to serve. So many years ago, when first starting to think about what this photography business could even be, I remember wanting it to simply succeed, but also deeply wanting the work I create to have an impact, inspire, and uplift women of various ages, shapes, races, and backgrounds. I wanted to make a living doing something extremely fun and inspiring, not just for myself, but for the people around me.

In an effort to remember my why’s, I recently asked a handful of previous clients some questions and share their input about their favorite images from their photo shoot with Heartbox Photography. It was encouraging to hear/read some of their responses. I am extremely honored to share with you all one of the responses I received from my client, the lovely Danielle Dayoub-Forrest and her input on her favorite image below.

I guess what I am trying to say is that when you’re an entrepreneur like me, make a concerted effort to remember your why’s regularly. Not just as an end of the year, beginning of the year thing, but throughout the year, throughout the months, throughout the weeks. And if you forget or need help, a great place to start is simply reconnecting with the clients you serve or have served in the past. =)

Happy Thursday, everyone.

How does this photo makes you feel?

I feel so myself here. It just sums up my work and my personality. And when I'm not present/in the moment, this is how I aspire to be.”

Why is the woman in that photo beautiful?

“She's a listener, she's smart, she's happy, she's comfortable in her own skin.”

What would you say to the woman who wants to do a personal portrait shoot of herself but is too afraid to or thinks they shouldn't because of how they feel/look?

“Maria does a great job of helping you just feel at ease- to move with confidence, and when the inner you is shining, the pictures always turn out beautifully.”

What do you think your children or grandchildren will say when they look back and see this photo of you years down the road? “I think they'll see the essence of the same woman they know, but a glowing version of her.”

A Journey of Learning & The Importance of Cheerleaders

“My journey was that of learning. I was always a very curious being, always looking for opportunities to learn more… about everything. This has really allowed me the courage to start my own entrepreneurial journey. I was never alone on that journey. I was surrounded with people who love me and they were my biggest supporters and cheer leaders.”

“We need to be nicer to ourselves and realize its OK to not be able to do everything.

Miranda | A Celebration of Black Excellence

“As African-Americans, we're often underestimated but we rise above it. We honor Black excellence by never forgetting the sacrifices our ancestors made so we can live with dignity and freedom.”

-Miranda Wilson

Portraits by Heartbox Photography. Copyright 2019. All rights reserved._4637.jpg

As a proud Bay Area native, I am especially pleased to have Miranda Wilson highlighted in today’s post for the Celebration of Black Excellence Series.

When I first connected with Miranda, I immediately felt a welcoming and warmth from her. While sharing the details of what this photoshoot would entail, we also exchanged stories about our own personal upbringing here in the Bay Area, which included a special love and appreciation for Bay Area radio.

As a native of Oakland, Miranda’s life and career are overflowing with an obvious and beautiful zest for life, rich in experiences which, to me, testify greatly to the truth that stories of the human experience are always worth slowing down to listen to and learn from.

With over 30 years in San Francisco Bay Area Radio, her experience includes work at local Bay Area station, KBLX, as well as prior work with heritage stations KSOL and KDIA and 18 years as Midday Host at KKSF 103.7.

She is a two-time winner of the Golden Gate Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television Award as Best Midday Host and is active in the market and nationally as a Voiceover Actress. HGTV, Wells Fargo Bank, Land Rover, and Intel are just some of the companies that have called upon her skills in helping to represent their products/services.

Giving back is to her community remains a consistent priority for Miranda. She is an active volunteer Writer Coach for Oakland schools through the Community Alliance for Learning/Writer Coach Connection. Miranda has also served as a dedicated board member of the East Oakland Youth Development Center, Progressive Transition(s), a non- profit organization that provides counseling for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking and was a volunteer at Solid Foundation Mandela House Oakland, a substance abuse program for pregnant and parenting women.

 ***

What are you most proud of in your life and why?

“My career- 33 years in the media/entertainment industry. My path has had plenty of zigs and zags. Although my deep desire was to be an actress in the theatre, the path that lead me to radio has been an exciting journey that has thoroughly enriched my life.”

What is something most people might now know about you?

“Most people know that I sing-Gospel, R & B and Jazz but what most don't know that I studied voice from my teen years into my 30's and I am a classically trained singer.”

Can you tell me about someone who has had a huge influence on your life?

“The woman who gave me life, my mother, Mrs. Bettie Cheeks Austin.”

What lessons did that person teach you?

“She was a woman of great faith and she taught me (and all six of her children) to have faith in God, to be resilient, to celebrate the joys in life, nothing beats a failure but a try and to make every stumbling block your stepping stone. She also believed that within every person lies a special gift and that that gift would always make room for you in life!”

What is the best advice you've ever received?

“In radio, I had a Program Director who told me to "Be yourself!"

Who/what inspires you and why?

“I'm often inspired by the quiet places. where there are tall cathedral Redwood trees, the sound of a stream, birds singing and the whispering of the wind.

The Redwoods because they cause you to look up when you're down. The sound of water flowing in a stream because it represents movement like time passing. We can watch our problems flow right on by... The birds know their job they sing because that's what they were born to do...And the whispering of the wind- is like the presence of God. We don't know where it comes from or where it goes but we experience its presence when it's there. All of that reminds me to just be still.”

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“I've met a lot of famous and infamous people in my lifetime but in history, Harriet Tubman is the one I'd like to meet. She was considered less than a human being because she was a slave. Yet this seemingly ordinary woman was inspired to do the extraordinary. She used her unassuming presence, and over a ten-year span made 19 trips to the South to free over 300 slaves through the Underground Railroad and lived a long life as a free woman in her own home.”

Tell us a bit more about your background - where are you from, anything you wish to share about yourself personally, what inspired you to choose your specific area of education and eventual career?

Bay Area native, born/raised in Redwood City, CA. At the age of 12, I decided I wanted to earn some extra money. It was probably to go shopping or to the movies with my friends! I got this idea to ask my neighbors if I could rake the leaves from their front yards. I made $30 my first day. From that point on, I knew that earning my own money was something I wanted to continue!

As a teenager, I continued to earn my own money through odd jobs, babysitting and neighborhood events! The entrepreneurial seed was planted, but it was not until I took an entrepreneurship course in college that I decided to major in Business Administration, with an emphasis in International Business.

I actually fell into financial planning and wealth management after I returned home from college, student loans in tow. It was a decision that shaped my career path and led me to the ultimate opportunity to start my own business providing service to financial advisory firms.

What are you most proud of in your life and why?

I am most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone in 2007 and travelled to Ghana, West Africa for a medical and humanitarian mission.

What is something most people might not know about you?

Many people may not know that I am a big basketball fan, played in high school, intramural leagues during and after college.

Can you tell me about someone who has had a huge influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

My parents have had a huge influence on my life. Collectively they taught me to have a strong faith, love and believe in myself and to pursue my goals with determination!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t be harder on yourself than others are! Be kind to yourself.

Who/what inspires you and why?

I am inspired by people who have had extreme difficulties in life, yet are able to rise above and be successful. It reminds me that my problems are only as big as I make them out to be.

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

I would want to meet Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968. In 1972, she became the first African-American candidate for a major party’s nomination for President of the United States. For a woman to do this in the late 60’s and 70’s is amazing in so many ways. I’d want to hear what inspired her to step out during a time when women, let alone black women were seen in a subservient light.

What does it "honoring and celebrating black excellence" mean to you?

Honoring and celebrating “black excellence” to me is remembering that I come from a long line of amazing, talented and resilient individuals who have set the stage for where I am today. I honor them and myself when I can acknowledge their struggles and embrace the opportunities they set before me.

Dr. Shea Lindsay | A Celebration of Phenomenal Women

“Your body hears everything your mind says.”

-Naomi Judd

I think one of my favorite things about Shea is that when we first connected over a Zoom conference call a few months ago, I learned she was just as passionate about all things involving holistic health as I was. When someone else can understand and get excited with you about the healing properties of vegetables, well, in my book, they deserve a high-five. =)

Dr. Shea Lindsey is founder primary practitioner of the Chiropractic and Functional Living Boutique here in Menlo Park.  Using the chiropractic technique, Network Spinal, she helps patients heal from past physical and emotional traumas, become more adaptable to stresses, as well as give them the tools and resources to replace old patterns with new more optimal life strategies.

Joining us on the photoshoot was none other than her sweet son, Liam. It was a beautiful summer day and being able to create images that also captured the essence of Dr. Shea as a mother was a wonderful reminder of the joys that still very much continue to exist.

I am honored to share the latest profile on this incredible woman, wife, mother, and healer - Dr. Shea Lindsay.

Can you tell me a bit about you as a person (your own life journey thus far), what inspired you to start your company, and what you find most rewarding about your work?

“Honestly, I’ve always been a super sensitive person, sensitive to other peoples energy, food, stress, chemicals…you name it.  I think because of that, I was extremely anxious  and experienced headaches for most of my life.  Thankfully, I had a mother who was very knowledgeable about holistic health and present in my life.  She really helped me shape a healthy perspective about my sensitivity. “

“New England born and raised, I found my way to California to make a change and to start my life.  After personal training and teaching fitness classes for about a year, I decided to start my doctorate in Chiropractic.  There I learned about an amazing gentle technique, Network Spinal that helped people liberate their bodies from trauma allowing them to live with more freedom.  It ended up changing my whole relationship to anxiety!”

“I started my own practice after working for a doctor for a few years because I knew if I branched out on my own it would be scary, but worth it!  I have been practicing in Redwood City for 2 years helping to align peoples spines and help them liberate their own traumas and tension.

I love what I do because I get to watch people transform everyday and become more aligned with their truest and most authentic self.”

Who or what 3 things have helped shape you to be the woman you are today and the woman you are becoming?

“Moving to California was a very important part of my journey.  That is where I began to truly grow into my own.

My soul sister Lindsay helped guide me towards chiropractic school and Network spinal.  I feel like this step was so important in my evolution to who I am today.

My daughter Sage was an unexpected pregnancy 3 years ago.  Being pregnant with her transformed me!  When she passed away, my whole life changed.  Her gift of life and death woke me up to my own purpose and passion in life.  Because of her, I am more on purposed and open than I have ever been.”

Best advice you ever received?

“Follow your knowing.  It is always there for you to access when you need it.”

What do you appreciate most about your life now?

“My family.  We have the most amazing son who is 7 months old.  My husband and I have been able to be home a lot, so this last few months have been the sweetest time together. “

DJ Express | A Celebration of Black Excellence

“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.”

-Plato

I have always thought there was a whole new level of cool whenever I hear a woman is in an occupation that is more commonly filled by men. The list is endless of these types of occupations, and no doubt, being a DJ is one of them.

Meet DJ Express.

Beneath this San Jose native’s quiet demeanor lies a deep love and passion for all kinds of music and for me, a Bay Area native who also believes that music truly does have a soul language all it’s own, you can just imagine how excited I was to have her and her work represented in this series.

In our time together, I got to learn a little more about her journey as a DJ, her inspirations as an artist, her hopes as a young professional, post collegiate years, and her family background as an Eritrean black woman.

An early morning photoshoot in some of my favorite areas of downtown San Jose getting to know this awesome individual was, needless to say, one of the best ways to spend a Saturday.

I am honored to share with you all today’s spotlight profile on this talented and incredible woman, DJ Express.

Tell us a bit more about your background - where are you from, what inspired you to be a DJ?

“[I was] born and raised in San Jose, CA – the daughter of two Eritrean immigrants. There are two DJs I met at events in the East Bay Area that inspired me to take this seriously: Eden Hagos – an Eritrean woman DJ that had one of the most versatile yet well-mixed sets I’ve listened to and another DJ that was able to read and vibe off his crowd in a way I haven’t seen DJs do in a long while.”

“[I am most proud of] being able to identify myself as an Eritrean black woman. I am proud of the bloodline I’m from and being able to live my purpose representing my people.”

What is something most people might now know about you?

“Love musicals and Broadway. Going to performing arts schools growing up, I had a chance to participate and grew to love the production that goes behind these shows.”

***

Can you tell me about someone who has had a huge influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

“My dad and brothers play a huge influence my life. Each of them pursued goals that others would say are unthinkable, then achieved them, usually being the first in their specialties to do so. Their persistence, drive, humility, and faith in God have always reminded me to stay true to my vision.”

***

What is the best advice you've ever received?

“People have the right to hate you for no reason.” - my dad

“They say every man is defined by his reaction to any given situation. Well, who would you want to define you…someone else? Or yourself? Whatever you do homie, give your heart to it, and stay strong.” - The late, “Tha Great” Nipsey Hussle.”

Who/what inspires you and why?

“Jadav Payeng – who spent 37 years of his life planting trees to restore the oasis he grew up on in Majuli island which was destroyed due to human deforestation.

Every day (for about a total of 13,505 times) this man would walk to the destroyed barren and plant a tree. Mr. Payeng single handedly grew a forest twice the size of Central Park and brought back hundreds of animals to the oasis.”

“When I feel hopeless about the current climate, I think about him, and ways I can create daily habits that will lead to accomplishing a greater purpose.”

***

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“Archbishop Desmund Tutu – to have a conversation with him regarding how his faith lead him during the apartheid in South Africa.”

***

What does "honoring and celebrating black excellence" mean to you?

“As a DJ , I  honor and celebrate black excellence by making sure I buy from/work with black businesses, support and promote black creatives on my radio show/sets, unapologetically work with venues that respect their black patrons and wear and accessorize items that I’ve bought from black business owners during my live sets. (I.E. glasses, makeup and earrings in this photoshoot were purchased from black women-owned businesses.)”

Dr. Mayen Udoetuk | A Celebration of Black Excellence

“Who you are surrounded by often determines who you become.”

-Vicky Saunders

“Honored” doesn’t even come close to fully describing how I feel as I continue to be privileged to meet and learn more about women like Dr. Mayen Udoetuk.

My first connection with her was about a year ago at a panel discussion she organized here in the Silicon Valley addressing the topic of women in leadership and diversity and inclusion. I was one of the members in the audience and what I remembered walking away with was an even more solidified belief that women have much value to bring to the table and to the discussion. I think that having a willingness to learn is one of the greatest attributes in a true leader and Dr. Udoetuk, having led such an important discussion, is an example of that.

She is no doubt a role model in many respects for others and to have her included in this series that celebrates Black excellence inspires me deeply - to do work that is meaningful, to see the richness in people’s stories, and to be extremely thankful for the people who have helped me along my own path.

Without further ado, I am proud to share with you today’s spotlight on Dr. Mayen Udoetuk.

“I'm from Houston, Texas. I first fell in love with chemistry from listening to my mom explain the world around me, but also from watching countless episodes of "Bill Nye The Science Guy" and "The Magic School Bus". After years of undergraduate training, summers spent in various university research labs, and conducting on-campus research during each semester, I earned my BS in Chemistry.

Afterwards, I went directly into a Master degree program for Microelectronics-photonics (a type of engineering). Though I was initially intrigued by that field and the bioanalytical chemistry research I was conducting at the time, I became more interested in what was happening to me psychologically during such a strenuous learning process. That's when I found out about educational psychology. Since then, I've earned a Masters and a Doctorate in the field, and have crafted my career around it.

I'm most proud of my resilience, my humanity, and my creativity. Each one of these attributes has helped me thrive when I wanted to give up, to be humble enough to ask for and receive assistance when needed, and to exemplify creative problem solving in my personal and professional lives. “

What is something most people might not know about you?

“There's a lot people don't know about me. One thing I don't mind sharing is that despite my extrovert tendencies, I'm an introvert through and through. Most people also don't know that I'm a creative regarding resin work, flower pressing, dancing, playing piano, and drawing. I've spent so much of my life being focused on my career that I never really shared those aspects of myself until recently.

Can you tell me about someone who has had a huge influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

“I've been blessed with so many people who have had huge, positive influences on my life. To name a few: Dr. Jim Hammons introduced me to the world of education and how to thrive in it; my mentors and good friends Dr. Carol Bunch Davis, Dr. Liz Borda, and Dr. Juan Sanchez taught me to lean into my strengths and be accounted for with each new professional milestone and challenge; my mom and good friend Dr. Kenyatta Dawson taught me to embrace my creative self wholeheartedly; my mom and dad taught me to be courageous when taking calculated risks; and my inner circle of "sista friends" taught me what it means to cultivate sisterhood.”

If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be and why?

“I'd love to meet my maternal great -grandmother and grandmother, as well as my paternal grandmother. I can only imagine the warnings and wisdom they'd share.”

“The people who inspire me most are those that came from very little or nothing, yet still found a way to make something extraordinary with their lives while also blessing others in the process.

When you're raised in an environment that focuses on survival, it's extremely difficult to evolve your mindset and behavior. Those that find a way out of vicious cycles for themselves and for others through constructive means are the true MVPs.”

***

What does honoring and celebrating Black excellence mean to you personally?

“Honoring and celebrating Black excellence is alchemy exemplified. Alchemy is "a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination". Or, to put it plainly, taking nothing and making it something.

There's no doubt in my mind that is indeed Black excellence.

We honor and celebrate it by not letting the work of our ancestors be in vain as we build upon their legacies while creating our own.”
